I've lived in the country for most of my adult life and am fascinated by 'old technologies' that allowed the individual freedom to create one's own survival. Today I ran across a this book in a description of how to make a home-made water filter. With all my knowledge I was stunned by the simplicity and was aware of the effectiveness of the device. A very wordy book, but especially entertaining - even informative - because of all those words!
The descriptions and helpful tips transport the reader to the era of their grandparents' parents.

From a section about beds and (probably) unintended humor about public clothing:
"... aged persons require much more covering than those in middle life." p.58
