Monet Refuses The Operation — by Lisel Mueller

Post any poetry here. It's just too hard to define "inspired" in this context, so we will settle for that which inspires.

Monet Refuses The Operation — by Lisel Mueller

Post by Welles »

This is a wonderful poem... here's a bit of the beginning.
Doctor, you say there are no haloes
around the streetlights in Paris
and what I see is an aberration
caused by old age, an affliction.
I tell you it has taken me all my life
to arrive at the vision of gas lamps as angels,
to soften and blur and finally banish
the edges you regret I don't see,
to learn that the line I called the horizon
does not exist and sky and water,
so long apart, are the same state of being.

I never knew that Monet had cataracts. Makes me really think about how what some curse can be blessings. I suppose it is all in the way we view the "grand design."
That is a very special poem. Thank you, Welles.
